If you’ve spent any amount of time online lately, you’ve probably seen an ad promising that AI can build you an entire website in minutes.
Choose your business type. Answer a few questions. Click a button. Boom. Website.
So, can you actually build a website with AI? Absolutely. But should you? Well…that depends. Before you assume this is going to be an article about why AI is terrible and you should hire a web designer instead, let me stop you right there.
I love AI. I use AI regularly in my own business. I use it to brainstorm, research, organize ideas, work through content, develop systems and automate processes. I’ve invested time into learning AI, automation, SEO, content marketing and even Answer Engine Optimization because I believe these tools are going to continue changing the way we do business.
AI isn’t something I’m afraid of competing with. But I also know something that’s becoming increasingly important as AI makes powerful technology available to practically everyone: Having access to a tool and knowing how to use that tool effectively are two very different things. And websites are a perfect example.
What Can AI Actually Do When Building a Website?
Quite a lot, actually.
Depending on the platform you’re using, AI can help you choose a layout, generate website copy, suggest colors, create images, organize pages and sometimes generate most of a functioning website from a simple description of your business. That’s pretty incredible. Even if you’re not using an AI website builder, tools like ChatGPT can be extremely useful during the website-building process.
You can use AI to help you think through questions like:
- What pages should my website have?
- How should I describe my services?
- What information will my customers be looking for?
- What calls to action should I include?
- How could I organize my homepage?
- What questions should I answer in my FAQ?
For a small-business owner staring at a completely blank screen thinking, I don’t even know where to start, AI can be an incredible tool for turning what’s in your head into something you can actually work with. And I absolutely think you should use it for that. The problem comes when we start expecting the tool to replace the strategy behind it.
An AI-Generated Website Isn’t Automatically a Good Website
This is probably the biggest distinction I want business owners to understand. Building a website is easy. Building an effective website is different. Your website has a job.
Maybe its job is generating leads. Maybe you need customers to schedule appointments. Maybe you’re selling products. Maybe you’re trying to rank in local search results. Maybe you simply need someone who hears about your business to visit your website and immediately think, Yep. These are the people I want to call.
Whatever that goal is, every part of the website should help move the visitor toward it. That means thinking about more than whether the page looks pretty. You have to consider navigation, mobile design, calls to action, search optimization, accessibility, page speed, user experience, integrations, forms, content, branding and what happens after someone actually clicks that big shiny button.
AI can help with many of those things. But someone still needs to understand why they’re doing them.
AI Can Be Wrong — Even When It Sounds Very Confident
If you’ve used AI for any length of time, you’ve probably experienced this one. AI can give you an answer that sounds incredibly convincing. And it can be completely wrong. It can misunderstand what you’re asking, generate inaccurate information, make spelling or grammatical mistakes, invent details that don’t exist, or give you generic copy that could just as easily belong to the business down the street.
That’s annoying when you’re brainstorming dinner ideas. It’s a much bigger problem when that information is being published on the website representing your business. AI-generated content should still be reviewed by a human who knows the business. Check your facts. Check your services. Check your locations. Check your prices. Check your links. And please read the words AI writes before putting them on your website.
AI should assist your judgment—not replace it.
Not Every AI Website Builder Gives You the Same Freedom
This is another area where the answer to “Can I build my website with AI?” becomes: Yes…but know what you’re signing up for.
Some AI website builders are incredibly capable. Others can become frustrating the moment you want something outside the system they’ve created for you. You may discover limitations involving design customization, integrations, ecommerce, forms, SEO controls, plugins, moving your website somewhere else later, or adding functionality as your business grows.
And sometimes the limitation is much simpler than that. You just want something moved. Or resized. Or displayed differently on a phone. Or you want a form to do one additional thing. And suddenly that website you created in five minutes has turned into three hours of trying to convince a platform to make one tiny change. That’s the part the “build your website in 30 seconds!” advertisement doesn’t show you.
Sometimes the Smallest Details Make the Biggest Difference
This is one of the reasons I still believe there’s tremendous value in working with an actual web designer. AI may get you 80% of the way there incredibly quickly. But that last 20% is often where a website stops looking like a website and starts looking like your business.
Maybe there’s technically nothing wrong with a section, but it just doesn’t feel right. Maybe the mobile layout looks weird. Maybe customers keep overlooking an important button. Maybe you’ve added a new service and now the navigation doesn’t make sense. Maybe your business has changed six months after launch. Or maybe you simply want to send somebody a text that says: “Hey, can you change this?”
There is value in having a human being who already understands your business, your website and what you’re trying to accomplish. That’s something an instant website generator can’t replace.
Will an AI-Built Website Rank on Google?
It can.
There isn’t some automatic rule that says a website created with AI can’t appear in search results. But using AI to generate a website doesn’t automatically mean the website has a good SEO strategy, either. There is still research involved.
What are your potential customers actually searching for? Which searches make sense for your business? What pages should target those searches? Is Google able to properly crawl and understand the site? Does your content actually answer what people are looking for? Are your page titles, headings, internal links and images helping search engines understand your content?
And now there’s another layer to think about: AI-powered search and answer engines. People aren’t only finding businesses through the traditional Google search results we’ve known for years. They’re increasingly asking AI tools direct questions and expecting direct answers. That means businesses have to start thinking beyond simply putting keywords on a page. The website still needs useful, trustworthy, well-structured information. AI can help create that content.
Strategy determines whether that content is actually doing anything for you.
So…Should You Build Your Own Website With AI?
For some people?
Yes. Absolutely.
If you’re starting a very small business, you have virtually no budget, you need a simple online presence and you’re comfortable figuring things out yourself, an AI website builder might be exactly what you need right now. I’d rather see a new business create a simple, accurate website than spend three years with no website at all because they’re waiting until they can afford the perfect one.
AI can also be fantastic for helping you develop your vision before you ever hire someone. Use it to explore layouts. Brainstorm your messaging. Think through your customer journey. Figure out what you like and don’t like. Ask questions. Experiment. Bring those ideas with you when you’re ready to build something more.
AI belongs in your tool belt. It just doesn’t have to be the only tool in there.
When Does Hiring a Web Designer Make More Sense?
The equation starts changing when your website becomes an important part of how your business makes money. If you need your website to generate leads, rank competitively in search, sell products, connect with other business systems, support marketing campaigns, provide more advanced functionality or grow substantially over time, professional strategy becomes much more valuable.
The same is true if you simply don’t want another piece of technology to manage yourself. Business owners already wear enough hats. Just because AI makes it possible to do something yourself doesn’t necessarily mean doing it yourself is the best use of your time.
AI Isn’t Replacing My Job. It’s Changing My Toolbox.
This is probably the part of the AI conversation I find most interesting. I don’t see AI as something I need to fight. I use it.
I want to understand it. I want to know what it does well. I want to know where it falls short. And I want to use it wherever it helps me create better work and better systems for my clients. But there’s still a human behind that process.
Someone still needs to understand the business.
Someone needs to ask the right questions.
Someone needs to recognize when something isn’t working.
Someone needs to know when the AI is wrong.
And sometimes someone needs to move that one thing three pixels to the left because you swear it looks better that way. 😂
AI can build a website. Expertise turns that website into a tool for your business.
And I think there’s plenty of room for both.
If you’re still wondering whether your business needs a website at all, I broke that down in Does Your Small Business Really Need a Website?
K, Love y’all! Bye!
